LEDs or light emitting diodes are highly energy efficient. LEDs have been around for decades, first commercially used in panel lights. Appearing as practical electronic components in 1962, early LEDs emitted low-intensity red light, but modern versions are available across the visible, ultraviolet, and infrared wavelengths, with very high brightness.
They can have long life – lasting up to 50,000hrs. This equates to 50 times the average incandescent lamp (at 1000hrs) and up to 5 times the life of most fluorescent lamps (at 10,000hrs)....more about this
